Educational Day Out With The Kids
Bolsover Castle August 2019. We are always looking for fun family day out with the kids and Bolsover Castle is perfect for this! Part of the English Heritage sites in the UK, there is so much to see and do here. This review actually took place before the Corona virus last August 2019. It was just after we had returned from our Florida Road Trip.
LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
History is one of my favourite topics to teach and I love learning about important historical events with the boys. Visiting museums and historical sites is something that is very important to us a family. Originally a medieval castle built in the 12th century, the castle ruins were replaced as a Stuart Mansion by Sir Charles Cavendish. The tower is known as ‘little castle’ was completed in 1621.
Currently we are English Heritage members which gives us access to approximately 400 historic building, sites and monuments. Please note that due to the Corona Virus lockdown only certain sites are available and you have to pre book online. Please visit English Heritage for more information.
Things to do with kids at BOLSOVER
Located in Derbyshire, Bolsover Castle has lots to do for a perfect family day out with the kids. From jousting, to knight training, exploring the fantastic views of the Derbyshire countryside you will find a fun filled day out! Certain activities may be seasonal so it is always worth checking before you visit. Built in the 17th Century, the present castle exists over the ruins of the 12th century medieval castle.
Knight training had to be the boys most favourite part of the day. Zack even had a go when he had a broken elbow! As well as training to be a knight the boys listened to talks all about how children would have trained and what armour and tools they would have used. Perfect for primary school children and big kids too!
jousting and medieval renactments
Jousting and historical talks are performed on certain days. Bringing history to life this really helped the boys learn about how life would have been like at Bolsover Castle. Over on our You Tube channel you can see some of these events we experienced on our visit.
inside the castle
Currently limited numbers can still visit inside the castle. The boys really loved exploring inside the ‘little castle’ it really helped them learn all what life was like centuries ago.
Bolsover Castle boasts some amazing views of the Derbyshire countryside. For the first time in 250 years you can explore the Wall Walk which has been restored. We love the views from the top of the castle.
Things to do with little ones
During the holidays there was a variety of crafts available. The boys loved learning all about heraldry. Here is some photos of the boys designing their own shields. There is also a play area and loads of space for family picnics.
tips for a family day trip
Here are some tips based on our trip to Bolsover Castle in August 2019. Please note: Due to COVID 19 you will need to check the English Heritage website for up to date visitor information. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk
- Take a picnic – there are loads of places to enjoy a family picnic at the castle
- Parking – there is a small car park next to the entrance however this fills up quickly. Arrive early or plan where you are going to park as it is quite hilly!
- Enquire about an English Heritage membership – there are loads of benefits such as a children’s and adults members magazine. The boys love collecting their badges each time thy visit a new historical site.
- Some of the seasonal events such as jousting arrive early to get a good spot. This reminded us of waiting for a Disney parade!
