Puffin Festival of Big Dreams

Paid partnership with Puffin Books.

stories for young children & older children nine plus

This week we are taking part in the Puffin Festival of Big Dreams. A week long event running from the 8th to the 14th June 2020. As a family we have loved taking part in this event and learning about our favourite stories for young children and older children 9 plus. We have also loved discovering new ones too! Reading as a family is something we are passionate about and it is something I have talked about often on our blog. I love finding new children’s books to enjoy with our boys and also when I am teaching.

We were so excited to take part in this festival. Every day this week there are events running on the Puffin Facebook channel and Puffin You Tube channel. The videos are 20 minutes long and feature authors including Jaqueline Wilson, Yassmin Abdel- Magied, Sam Copeland, Dapo Adeloa, and Robin Stevens . All videos are presented by Radzi Chinyanganya and also include resident illustrator Nick Sharratt. During each event you are set a challenge so make sure you have your pens and paper! You can also download the event pack from the puffin website.

The event pack includes loads of fun activities such as designing your own puffin dream! You can also send in your kids dreams to [email protected] for a chance to have them drawn by Nick Sharratt! They have also coloured in the first parts of their dream rainbow which they will continue to colour in every day this week! There are load of other fun activities in the pack all themed around stories for young children and children aged 9 plus. Activities include word search, puffin book reviews and colouring activities.

Workshops and creative challenges

The boys have really enjoyed taking part in the Puffin Festival of Dreams festival today which is running every day this week. There are workshops and creative challenges every day. So far the boys have taken part in Creative Writing Challenges with Yasmin Abdel-Magied who is the author of ‘You Must Be Layla’. The boys wrote about where they would travel to in their magical jalabeeya. Some of their ideas included time travel and visiting ancient civilisations. A perfect way to be creative on a Monday!

Other fun events so far have been the Animal Quiz by Sam Copeland. This is linked to his book ‘Charlie Changes Into a Chicken’ the main character Charlie transforms into an animal when he gets nervous. The boys had to guess which animal was being described in the quiz. This was a really fun activity to complete at home and perfect for any families who are currently in lockdown homeschooling due to the coronavirus COVID19. The boys have also been getting creative with the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar Storytime’ and the Puppet Theatre Workshop presented by Hannah Tooke. Don’t worry if you have missed any all are available now on the Puffin Facebook and You tube channel. We can’t wait for the rest of the events this week!

  1. This looks so good. My daughter loves reading wish I’d have seen it sooner. Looks like they had a great time!
